Food Forest Design and Care for Cities and Suburbs

with Toby Hemenway

Food forests, or edible forest gardens, are life-filled places that not only provide food for people, but habitat for wildlife, carbon sequestering, biodiversity, natural soil building, beauty and tranquility, and a host of other benefits. This workshop covers the basics of designing, planting, and maintaining a many-layered woodland garden of fruit and nut trees, perennial and annual vegetables, and flowers. In this class Toby gives you both the theory behind food forests and a wealth of practical information, including which plants to use, where to start, and what to expect as your food forest grows.

How to Grow a Medicinal Food Forest

An On-Line Course presented by Michael (Skeeter) Pilarski

Course Overview

Anyone with a patch of land can grow a food forest! A food forest, or forest garden, is a gardening technique that mimics a forest ecosystem but substitutes in edible trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. A medicinal food forest has the additional benefit of producing medicinal botanicals. Fruit and nut trees comprise the upper canopy of the forest while below are berry shrubs, edible perennials, herbs, root crops and annuals. Companion plants are included to attract beneficial insects, build the soil, and provide mulch. Together they create a sustainable forest garden ecosystem able to produce high yields of food with less maintenance.

In this course Michael Pilarski, permaculture and wildcrafting expert, teaches you how to turn your back yard into a food forest. Filmed on site in Michael’s back yard, this is not a classroom-based course. Michael teaches the basics of food forest planting while planting his own medicinal food forest on 1/8 of an acre. Does an 1/8 of an acre sound big to you? Don’t worry! In this course Michael talks about how to scale what you’re learning to your own back yard or land.

Crisis of Civilization

by Dr. Nafeez Mosadeqq Ahmed

"The Crisis of Civilization is a remix documentary feature film investigating how global crises like ecological disaster, financial meltdown, dwindling oil reserves, terrorism and food shortages are converging symptoms of a single, failed global system."

This is a BRILLIANT synthesis by Dr. Ahmed on how we need to look at the converging crisis' of climate change, peak oil, food scarcity, the endless growth paradim and civilization as a single interelated process.  He is one of the most clear thinkers and communicators I have ever heard.   Well worth watching and sharing.  Did I mention that the use of old TV footage is hillarious and insightful.

Perennial Paradise

What If We Change video with Geoff Lawton

All around the world people are asking what they can do to help to heal the earth. The permaculture movement is showing what individuals can do to bring health and happiness into their lives and at the same time restore the Earth’s natural ecosystem function. In “Perennial Paradise” Geoff Lawton shows some of the many simple but practical work being used and taught at the Permaculture Research Institute’s Zaytuna Farm in Australia.

“What if we Change” is very happy that through this collaboration with the Permaculture Research Institute we can share this film on the website and in the broadcast series in Africa, China, the U.S.A. and beyond.

Redesigning Civilization – with Permaculture

by Toby Hemenway March 8, 2013

Modern agriculture, industry and finance all extract more than they give back, and the Earth is starting to show the strain. How did we get in this mess and what can we do to help our culture get back on track? The ecological design approach known as permaculture offers powerful tools for the design of regenerative, fair ways to provide food, energy, livelihood, and other needs while letting humans share the planet with the rest of nature. This presentation will give you insight into why our culture has become fundamentally unsustainable, and offers ecologically based solutions that can help create a just and sustainable society. This is the sequel to Toby’s popular talk, "How Permaculture Can Save Humanity and The Planet, but not Civilization."

Holistic Management

TED Talk with Allan Savory

WOW!  Recently Maurice Robinette gave a talk about "Holistic Management" at the Spokane Permaculture Study Group.  It was very interesting but after watching this TED Talk video from the originator of the concept (Allan Savory),  I realize I just didn't get the BIG PICTURE.  Very worth while video with global implications.  Thanks for the introduction Maurice :).
